About That Chair

Welcome to our little corner of the web, www.thatchair.com.au! We’re Cate and Peter, a husband-and-wife duo from the beautiful Sunshine Coast, QLD, with a love for all things Adirondack chairs.
My (Cate’s) love affair with Adirondack chairs began way back in the early ’70s in my Nana and Pop’s backyard in Cooee, Tasmania. That white timber chair was my playground, and it holds so many fond memories (if only I had a photo to show you!).
Fast forward to 2004: Peter and I started our adventure together in Devonport, Tasmania. Naturally, I wanted an Adirondack for our new backyard. But finding one? Nearly impossible! After a long search, we discovered a one-man band in Melbourne who shipped us two flat-packed beauties. Peter, my very own handyman, painted one white and the other blue, and many wines were enjoyed lounging in those chairs. Ahh, the serenity!

When we moved to the Sunshine Coast in 2012, we wanted more Adirondacks. Again, the hunt was on. That’s when we had a lightbulb moment: why not sell them ourselves? We found a fantastic supplier (it was Chris—the same guy who’d sold us our originals in 2004!). We started small, selling online and storing chairs in our garage. Then, when we bought The Fudge Cottage at Aussie World in 2015, we could finally put them on display… and wow, did they sell fast!
One day, Chris excitedly called us to say he’d found these incredible Adirondack chairs from the USA made from recycled milk bottles. They looked just like timber but were perfect for the Sunshine Coast weather and coastal conditions. Heavy as well so they wouldn’t blow around. We got a truckload in and couldn’t keep up with demand, selling to everyone from beach-loving locals to savvy commercial buyers.
Then came COVID…
Our stock flew out the door as everyone wanted to upgrade their gardens, but getting more chairs from the US was a challenge. We eventually sold The Fudge Cottage and took a break from retail—no space for storing chairs in our new apartment either!
Buyer Beware!
We believe not enough people know about this fantastic, eco-friendly option. Part of the challenge is the limited number of Polywood stockists in Australia, likely due to shipping costs and the US dollar. However, compared to cheaply made outdoor furniture imports, the price is comparable. The difference? You only need to buy Polywood furniture once, and it comes with a 20-year warranty. It almost makes us want to start selling them again! But since we’re semi-retired, it’s easier for us to point you to our trusted supplier, Chris, who ships these beauties semi-flat packed across Australia. Peter guarantees they’re a breeze to assemble, especially if you have a drill!
Normally as a retailer you don’t divulge your supplier. It is secret squirrel type stuff. But as we do not sell them any more we are more than happy to divulge….
…and recommend Chris at Polyoutdoor— he is the best! So, we decided to create this website to help guide you to the right Adirondack chair supplier. Because let’s face it, while these iconic chairs are easier to find these days, they’re not all created equal. Hence Buyer Beware!
